Freedom Attacked

The Socialist Party has throughout its history stood against those who advocated political vioence to further their aims. Those who believe in the efficacy of violence to solve the world’s problems simply deny the evidence of history. We in the SPGB abhor the methods of political terrorism. Marx devoted much of his time and energy to repudiating the views of those who urged terrorism as a tactic for the working class. Marx made clear the very nature of his conception of socialism precluded any form of minority violence. Our position is shared by many anarchists. "Proponents of terrorism and guerrilla-ism are to be opposed because their actions are vanguardist and authoritarian, because their ideas, to the extent that they are substantial, are wrong or unrelated to the results of their actions (especially when they call themselves libertarians or anarchists), because their killing cannot be justified, and finally because their actions produce either repression with nothing in return or an authoritarian regime."

Freedom Press bookshop has been badly damaged in a firebomb attack. See photos here

Freedom was started by Charlotte Wilson, Peter Kropotkin and others in 1886.  It is the oldest anarchist newspaper published in the UK today. It also stocks thousands of books, newspapers, pamphlets along with magazines, periodicals and newsletters from major anarchist and radical groups throughout the world and is a valuable resource for the labour movement.

They were uninsured and have made an appeal for help to repair the fire and water damage.
