FAILING GRADES IN EDUCATION

Britain has fallen from 17th in 2006 to 25th for reading skills among 15-year-olds and in maths, the UK has dropped from 24th to 28th and fell two places in science , from 14th to 16th according to a major 2009 study by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.

Martin Johnson, deputy general secretary of the Association of Teachers and Lecturers , said:
"... politicians should pay heed to the significant impact world-wide of social class on achievement. If we are to improve our education further, we have to reduce the inequality between classes, which is amongst the largest in the wealthiest nations."
